Testing, inspection and maintenance of abseil anchors and abseil rails

Periodic and PPM inspection and testing for all types of abseil anchors and abseil rails

The use of industrial rope access methods for building maintenance has become increasingly prevalent.  Many commercial properties in particular have their glazing cleaned by operatives using abseil techniques.  Accident statistics show this to be a safe activity when completed within the regulations, the vast majority of abseilers in the UK have been trained in accordance with IRATA (Industrial Roped Access Trade Association) guidelines. IRATA is the international governing body for commercial abseiling.

However well trained the operative is they are only safe providing the anchors to which they are connected are suitable and fit for purpose. Abseil anchors can consist of rails or pairs of single anchor points. All of which must be subjected to a bi-annual thorough examination under LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) 1998 with further guidance being provided by BS ISO 22846 Personal equipment for protection against falls — Rope access systems

Access Testing provide their clients with a comprehensive maintenance package for testing and inspecting abseil anchorages and equipment. LOLER requires thorough examination in line with a written scheme. Our view is that as a minimum an annual load test and a six-monthly thorough inspection should be completed; we carry out these tasks in full accordance with legislation, and our customer relationship management software package ensures that the visits are planned well in advance of the due dates, thus ensuring compliance for our clients.

Where a client is wishing to use parts of a structure or facade access installation as an anchor for abseil purposes, this will require a change of use process to be followed. More information on this process can be found on the attached downloadable SAEMA document.
